The Colosseum in Rome under a blue sky

Rome

About 2 h 15

Rome in a single day is ambitious, but unforgettable. Or book a night in the city and take your time to visit the Colosseum, the Vatican and a plate of cacio e pepe in Trastevere.

Getting there

Driving in central Rome is no fun, and the historic centre is a restricted traffic zone (ZTL). Park on the edge of the city near a metro station, or drive to Orvieto (about an hour away) and take the train to Roma Termini from there. There are also trains from Perugia to Rome.

Don’t miss

Classical

Colosseum and Roman Forum

Stand in the arena where gladiators fought and walk through the heart of ancient Rome. Book tickets online with a fixed time slot.

Vatican

Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel

Miles of art, with Michelangelo’s ceiling as the highlight. Book well in advance.

Free

St Peter’s Basilica

One of the largest churches in the world, with Michelangelo’s Pietà. Cover your shoulders and knees.

On foot

Pantheon, Piazza Navona and the Trevi Fountain

Three highlights within walking distance. Toss a coin into the Trevi and you’ll come back.

Food

Trastevere

Bends full of ivy and trattorias. Order cacio e pepe or carbonara and linger.

Our tips

  • Leave early and pick two or three highlights: Rome isn’t going anywhere.
  • Wear good shoes; you’ll easily walk twenty kilometers.
  • On the way back lies Orvieto, on its rock with a magnificent cathedral. A lovely place for a stop.

Staying longer?

Rome is a (long) day trip from Casa Tre Pettirossi. Come for a week or two: then there’s time for Umbria and a day in Rome.
