Gubbio
About 50 minutes
Gubbio is a medieval film set where people simply live. Grey stone, narrow stairways and a square that hangs like a balcony above the town. Fifty minutes’ drive, and well worth a whole day.
Don’t miss
Medieval
Piazza Grande and the Palazzo dei Consoli
The square hangs like a terrace above the rooftops. The 14th-century Palazzo dei Consoli houses the Eugubine Tablets: seven bronze plates with the most important text in the ancient Umbrian language.
Up the mountain
Cable car to Sant’Ubaldo
Step into an open basket for two and glide up to the Basilica of Sant’Ubaldo in about six minutes. Thrilling and beautiful. Check the opening times before you go.
Roman
Roman theatre
On the edge of town lies a theatre from the first century BC, with room for more than 6,000 spectators.
Craft
Ceramics
Since the Renaissance, Gubbio has been famous for its ceramics with red luster glaze. You’ll find lovely pieces to take home in the shops.
