Passignano sul Trasimeno on Lake Trasimeno

Lake Trasimeno

About 15 minutes

Lake Trasimeno is big, shallow and lovely and warm in summer. A quarter of an hour’s drive and you’re by the water: an ice cream in Passignano, a boat to an island or your toes in the sand.

Don’t miss

By boat

To the islands

Boats sail to the islands from Passignano, Tuoro, Castiglione del Lago and San Feliciano. Isola Maggiore is a fishing village with a single street and a lace museum; Isola Polvese, the largest, is a nature park with gardens and a small beach. The boats run from spring to the end of September.

On a peninsula

Castiglione del Lago

A small town with a medieval castle, the Rocca del Leone, and the frescoed Palazzo della Corgna. From the castle you have a view over the entire lake.

History

Tuoro and Hannibal

Here Hannibal lured the Roman army into a trap in 217 BC. A trail with twelve stops leads past the sites of the battle.

By bike

Around the lake

About 58 km in total, partly tarmac and partly gravel, and mostly flat. Ride the whole loop or just a lovely stretch along the reeds.

Swimming and water sports

The water is shallow and warms up nicely in summer, so it’s great for children too. Along the shore there are small beaches and lidos, including at Passignano, Tuoro (Punta Navaccia), San Feliciano and Castiglione del Lago. Rent a paddleboard, go sailing or windsurfing when the wind picks up.

Food and drink

Eat by the water in Passignano or Castiglione del Lago. Try tegamaccio, a stew of eel and perch on toasted bread, and the fagiolina del Trasimeno, a small bean protected by Slow Food. The hills around the lake grow the wines of the Colli del Trasimeno.

Events

Exact dates for 2027 will be announced; check the event’s website shortly before your trip.

The Palio delle Barche procession marches on under the bell in Passignano sul Trasimeno

July

Palio delle Barche, Passignano

Passignano’s districts compete in historical costume: rowing on the lake, then running through town with the boats on their shoulders.
